anti-trust laws seem to have, for the large part, seem to have been put in a drawer and rarely taken out.

Hmmm...there’s a flaw in your argument: soccer clubs routinely lose money and are often propped up - at least in the U.K. - by...billionaires. Wrexham would not and could not have gotten as far as it has without the deep pockets of its millionaire owners along with the halo effect of the docuseries covering their recent exploits. Man U has lost many millions the last couple of years as have Arsenal and others.

The owners of Wrexham, indeed any sports team, look to benefit from the increased equity value of their investment (as opposed to yearly profit and loss). The difference between the two is that in America profits are guaranteed by the closed-shop nature of the league. In England there are no such guarantees, as Bury FC (once a Premier League outfit, closed down in 2021) will attest. That's capitalism.
